I’ve been so excited to have a new website launched but I’ve been scared to death to write this first post. I want you to get to know me and I want to share my knowledge so your businesses will grow. You’re going to find me really opinionated. Don’t let that scare you! I’m here to help you, encourage you, and motivate you. I want you to feel excited about where you live, work and play.
I’ve always thought that if I wrote a book I would title it “Life on the Ladder”, as I’ve spent over twenty five years doing Displays and Merchandising for large corporations and smaller independent Retailers and Wholesalers in both Fashion and Giftware. I’ve seen it all! Sometimes I’ve felt like the ‘fly on the wall’, watching interactions between customers and displays. About ten years ago I became an Accredited Interior Decorator. That’s when Retail Design and Consultations really took off. I had found my niche! People are looking for answers. They have problems, sales are not what they want, they’re over-worked. They go to bed tired, with a headache and are overwhelmed. I have the cure! For these first posts I want to talk about elements for your Retail Space. Cash Desks, Fixtures, and Hangers.
Cash Desks Make me Happy
If you get the chance to make a custom cash desk you are so…lucky! They are a massive design job. It may take hours to decide what you need. Take lots of photos of what you have! Then, start with a list which will include every task and function you need to accomplish at that space. These will include: Space for hangers, cash drawers, CPU’s, POS systems, keyboards, wrapping paper, various bags, security tags, binders, garbage, open drawers, hold shelves and so on. Then ask, “Do I need one cash station at this desk or two?” Do I have room for a Cash Wrap. That’s the counter behind a cash desk, and it’s usually used for placement of product prior to purchase, or for wrapping the product. It is the designers job to put all of these elements into that space, and to design a functional and beautiful desk for you. There may be several revisions to this desk before you sign off on it. It is a huge responsibility for you and the designer to get this right.
Overheard recently… A newly designed cash desk is too low for even their shortest employee, and…there was no place for hangers or to wrap any items! That’s sad! If you don’t have the chance to design your own cash desk, you’ll now know when you are shopping for a ready-made one, what to look for. Here are a few photos of a new Cash Wrap designed by me, including my inspiration photo and initial drawings.
Here are some other images of desks that I love
This is so pretty once you ignore the bags hung on the back wall! I mean, who wrecks a great thing by doing this!
And there’s a bit too much stuff on the cash desk, but WHAT A CONCEPT. Love it!
In general a straight rectangle is the best shape. Curves start to minimize the space for those behind the counter.
This I love. Beautiful, Elegant and Traditional. I’ve shown a peek at the inside so you can see how the POS fits in.
